In December 2013, Union County hosted an event for high school students where they worked in groups to create a community service campaign. This event, known as UC STEP (Union County Student Training and Enrichment Program) challenged students to think outside of their own communities and create a service project to benefit individuals from throughout Union County. The winning campaign, Support 4 Soldiers, was an item collection drive for soldiers, which ran from March 19- May 15, 2014.
The Union County Support 4 Soldiers campaign engaged high school students throughout the County as they collected items to support soldiers both at home and overseas. During the campaign, students set up collection boxes in their schools and communities, sold Support 4 Soldiers wristbands and dog tags to raise money for shipping costs of care packages, volunteered at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home to support local veterans, and participated in school and community-based activities that encouraged involvement in this unique, county-wide project.
At the conclusion of the campaign, 250 care packages were assembled by students and community members at the Westfield Armory. These care packages were sent to our troops overseas by Bonds of Courage.
